    Notes:

    Name:
Eli enlisted 3 September 1864 in Co. "C" 189th regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry and was Honorably discharged on 30 May 1865. He participated in the Weldon R.R. raid and the final campaign around Petterburg and richmond and witnessed the surrender of Lee and his army at Appomattox. His obituary states that "He was a true and loyal soldier and since the war has always been interested in the welfare of the old soldiers. He was married to Abbie VanGuilder. To them were born three children, Joseph E. and Wm. S. of Mineola, Texas, and Eugene of Decatur, Ill. he came to Illinois in 1866, where he has resided ever since as a worthy and honored citizen.
"In 1868 he was married to Emma H. goodrich, of Virden, Ill., who survives him. As a result of this union there were born unto them five children, Nellie, now Mrs. O.B. Britton, of Taylorville, Herbert, who died in 1877, Oliver C., Lena and Jennie who reside at the old home. He was a charter member of Palmer Lodge No. 501, I.O.O.F. organized in 1872, has been a member in good standing ever since, and was always faithful in the discharge of his duties as a member of the order. He filled all the offices of the lodge and has been its representative at different times to the Grand Lodge. His mother, aged 88 years, still lives in New York. He has one brother and one sister living at Findlay, Ohio. The funeral was from the C.P. church at Palmer, on Saturday, Oct. 20, under the auspices of Palmer Lodge I. O.O.F., assisted by the Morrisonville Lodges and Higgins Post G.A.R., rev. W.W. officiating. His remains were followed to Palmer cemetery by a large concourse of friends and neighbors, who with his family, his fraternal brethren, and the old soldiers will sadly miss him"

According to the family bible, Eli and Emma adopted Lottie M. Goodrich, who was born 7 September 1878. (Author's note: The above newspaper article states that "He has one brother and one sister living at Findlay Ohio." I have read all 334 pages of the Findlay OH census for 1900 and found no brother. His sister Augusta is there, living with her son Amos. Two more of her sons also lived in Findlay in 1900, Cyrus and William Angel.
