Mrs. Warren Passed away at age of 81
Lived to see Crude Farm Methods change to modern ways

Mrs. Catherine Warren, one of Streator's oldest and most highly respected citizens passed away at 3:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon, February 5, 1918, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank Cook, corner of LaRue and Otter Creek streets. Death was due to the infirmities of old age, the deceased being aged eighty-nine years, nine months, and nineteen days. She had been failing in health for some time, but her last illness had been one of only three weeks duration.

Catherine Christler, daughter of Daniel and Sarah Christler, was born April 17, 1836, at Penn Yan, Yates County, New York. The family resided there until 1851, when they moved to Illinois by wagons, the only means of travel at that time, making the trip in three weeks. They settled in LaSalle county near Mendota.

    Married at Earlville

The deceased was united in marriage to Luther Warren on March 1857 at Earlville, Illinois and they resided on a farm near Earlville until 1864 when Mr. Warren entered service in the Civil War following the example of his three brothers who enlisted at the beginning of the war all continuing in service until responsibility of managing the farm and caring for three small children, which she succeeded in doing. At the close of the war they sold the farm and purchased another near Dwight, Illinois, where they resided for nine years, coming from there to Streator on April 23, 1891.

They were the parents of eight children, six of whom are still living, who dying in infancy. Mr. Warren passed away twenty-seven years ago, on June 12, 1891.

The remaining sons and daughters are Helen L. Morris, Thayer, Ill., Clara L. Rathbun, Lottie R. Glover, Minnie A. Cook, Willis H. Warren, and Hiram D. Warren, all of Streator.

    Sister Died at Mendota

Mrs. warren was one of a large family of children and her only remaining sister, Mrs. Sarah Austin whose birthday was the same as that of Mrs. Warren, but who was four years older, passed away at her home near Mendota on December 31, 1917, the last surviving member of the family now being her youngest brother.

Mrs. Warren has lived to see the difference between farming by hand or with oxen, and the present day farming with power-driven machinery.

Mr. and Mrs. Warren were among the first settlers of Streator coming here when this place was entirely covered with thick timber and before Santa Fe railroad was built. It was no small item among the settlers when that road was built through the timber and it passed very close to Mr. Warren's property.

Mrs. Warren is a descendant of some of the first families settling in New York City, among them being Auneke Jans, who married a man named Bogardu, both owning large tracts of land adjoining in the heart of New York City. This tract included property on which Trinity church now stands, the ground being leased by the Trinity Corporation for ninety nine years for that purpose. This property was lost by the heirs who allowed the lease to over-run for forty-four years. Another ancestor helped to build the church and died during the course of its construction, proof of which is shown by his saw-horse which still stands in the basement of the church and by the records which are on file. This was Mrs. Warren's grandfather.

    Was Ideal Neighbor

Mrs. Warren was a great worker in all her societies until a few years ago-taking an active part in their undertakings. She was one of the best of neighbors among whom she has been familiarly known for years as Grandma Warren and during her younger days never failed to respond where there was a need of aid among sick neighbors, relatives and friends.

She has been a member of the Streator W.R.C. for the past twenty-eight years, also a member of the Royal Neighbors of America for fifteen years, and was a charter member of the Degree of Honor, remaining a member of that order until it disbanded a few years ago.

Mrs. Warren was a member of the Methodist Church at Thayer, Ill. uniting with that church several years ago while visiting her daughter.
