    Notes:

    Name:
Mark received his nickname as a result of having been drawn for a jury to try the so-called witches. Not believing in the more or less popular schism of the day, he decided not to have anything to do with the proceedings, and the night before the trial he packed up and rode away. Family traditions tell us that he travelled as far as possible without a stop, comping on the shores of Lake Assawampsett in Lakeville. He went to his brother John in Middleboro, and on his advice settled in Rochester founding the Rochester clan of Haskells. However, since his family did not follow until 1697/8 they endured five years of separation. No doubt his ideas reflected the beinging up he received from his father. We admire hi e as a freethinker.
