    On the night of April 7, 1899, the spirit of George Gates took its flight to the God who gave it. He was aged 83 years, 7 months and 24 days. The deceased was afflicted for a number of years, but not confined to his room until the early part of the winter, from which time he suffered considerable; but bore his suffering patiently to the last. He was born in Belmont county. he came to this county early in life and settled in Center township where he resided until his death. He was loved by all who knew him, lending a helping hand to those in need and always rejoicing in the welfare and good of others. He was married to Eleanor Bruce in 1841. To this union were born two children--one son and one daughter. His son Valentine, is still living and Mr. Gates resided with him in the latter years until his death. The daughter, Lydia Jane, and his wife, preceded him a number of years before where he has gone to clasp glad hands with them on the other shore, where sorrow, pain and death can never come and parting is no more. The funeral services were conducted by Elder Levi Jones. After reading from the Language of the Savior, touching the resurrection of the dead and speaking a few words of comfort to relatives and friends, the remains were conveyed to the Presbyterian cemetery in Malaya where they were laid to rest, there to await the coming of Christ.
    A precious one from us is gone,
    A voice we loved is stilled;
    A place is vacant in our home
    Which never can be filled.

    Tis hard to break the tender cord
    When love has bound the heart
    Tis hard, so hard, to speak the words
    We must forever part.

    Yet again we hope to meet thee
    When the--of life has fled
    And in ------joy to greet thee
    ------tears are shed.
