The Mathers lived on the farm where he had spent his boyhood until 1915 when he bought a tract of unimproved land immediately north of Greene. There he laid out a residential section and built his own house in which he resided at the time of his death. His wife died in April of 1928.

In September of 1931, he was married to Miss Emma Jane Pringle. They spent some time travelling in the north and west and in California, until these last years which he spent at his home here in Greene.

He presented the building in which the Greene Library is located as a gift to the town in 1929 in memory of Laura Ebersold Mather.

He was a member of the Christian church at Clarksville and a member of the Masonic lodge four several years.
