Alice E. H. Deming

Mrs. Alice Eliza Hilton Deming, 66, of 829 Eighth East Street, died at her residence Wednesday at 2:50 p.m. of pernicious anemia.

Mrs. Deming, widow of Miles Deming, was born in Salt Lake City, September 6, 1872, a daughter of George and Sarah Pike Hilton. She was a member of the First L.D.S. ward Relief society.

Surviving are four sons, N. Harry, Lester and Kenneth Deming of Salt Lake City, and LaMar Deming of Los Angeles; a daughter, Mrs. Oral Lance of Salt Lake City; six brothers; Willard, George, Warren and Eugene Hilton of Salt Lake City; Albert Hilton of Oakland, Cal., and Arthur Hilton of Eavnston, Wyo.; two sisters, Mrs. James Stagg and Mrs. Oak Poulton, both of Salt Lake Cit, and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 1 pm at 36 East Seventh South street, and burial will be in Salt Lake City Cemetery.

"Deming Genealogy": Moses Deming with his wife moved from Williamstown to Michigan, and for many years his relatives heard nothing from him. It was finally learned that he had joined the Mormons, and emigrated with them to Utah. It is said that he had a daughter by his first wife, who died young, and that his wife soon followed her. Whether or not his affiliation with the Mormons occurred before her death, is not known. After diligent inquiries in Salt Lake City, the following facts have been learned: Moses Deming did not come to Utah with the first colony of Mormons,but was a member of the band called the "Seventies," which left Nauvoo, Ill., in 1848. He acquired some prominence in the Mormon church of "Latter Day Saints", and possessed considerable property, owning at his death about twelve acres in the city limits. He had three wives, including the one he married in Massachusetts who may have did before he married his second wife. B his first wife he had one child, and by the second wife three children, all of whom are dead. By his third wife, who is still living in Salt Lake City, he had six children, three of whom are living; Granville and Frank in Coalville, Utah, and Miles in Salt Lake City. His second wife was Maria Kitter, but his third wife, who came from England, refuses to give her family name.

Moses married Hannah Maria HOLDSWORTH on 12 Jul 1856 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hannah was born on 20 Feb 1832 in Bradford, England; died on 9 Jan 1913 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., Utah; was buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

UTAH PIONEER WOMAN DIES AT AGE OF 81

Mrs. Hannah Deming Askew, 81 years of age, died yesterday afternoon at her home, 843 South Eight East Street. Heart trouble was the cause of death. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made.

Mrs. Askew was born in Lancaster, England, February 20, 1832. She crossed the plans to Utah in 1854, and in 1855 was united in marriage with Moses Deming. Mr. Deming died forty-two years ago. Her second husband, George Askew, died about twenty years ago. She leaves three sons, Granville, and Frank Deming of Coalville, Summit county, and Miles Deming of Salt Lake.

Mrs. Askew had resided on her homestead in the First ward since 1856. She was widely known for her charitable deeds and was held in high esteem by her neighbors and by her associates in work performed in the interest of others.
