Earl B. Slawson returned to Illinois for the express purpose of enlisting, which he did in Company B, 34th Illinois Infantry, in March, 1863. This company became part of the army of Gen. Sherman in the 2d Brigade, 2d Division, 14th Army Corps. His company was engaged at the battle of Lookout Mountain, the siege of Atlanta, Buzzard's Roost and Crab Orchard, and he was in his place with them in that march to the sea, which has become a household word, and lastly, at the grand review at Washington, on the 24th of May, 1865, after which he received an honorable discharge on the 16th of July following. He then returned to Otoe County, Neb., and took up a homestead claim and made it his residence about fifteen years, then went to Palmyra, Neb., and engaged in the grocery business for about twelve months, subsequently engaging in mercantile pursuits at Utica, Neb., for three years. After this he returned to Palmyra, and for two years renewed his old life and occupation. At the close of that period he sold out and returned to his Otoe farm, and in 1884 came to Lancaster County and settled on his present farm, which contains some of the best land in the county, and includes eighty acres, all in an excellent state of cultivation.
August 24, 1862, was a red letter day, for he was then united in wedlock with Cordelia M. Brown, who was the daughter of Vivalda and Aura T. Brown, and was born Dec. 27, 1842.

Jesse Slawson was born in Oneida County, New York in 1809, and came to Portland in 1836. He was a capenter by trade and also followed farming near Spring Hill, while he was a resident of Portland. He now lives in Nebraska. Mr. Slawson married Miss Rachael M. Fuller in 1833. Their children are: Andrew, who married Catharine Joice, and lives in Missouri; Jesse D., who married Miss Lucy Kinney, and lives in Nebraska; Charles H., who married Miss Lydia Briggs, and lives in Kansas; Earl B., who married Miss Cordelia Brown, and lives in Nebraska; Howard F., who married Miss Mary Hepworth, and lives in New York; Seth H. who married Miss Jennie Patch, and lives in Portland; and Mary L., wife of Merritt Clifton, living in Portland.

Mrs. Aura T. Brown, a resident on Section 16, Portland Township, occupies a farm of 220 acres. She is a daughter of Jeremiah and Abigail Lindley, and was born in Tinmouth, Rutland Co., VT. Oct. 8, 1807. She was married in Middletown, that county, Jan. 2, 1832 to Vivalda Brown, who as a son of Jonathan Brown. The latter was born in Wells, same county, May 5, 1807. They had nine children - Jeremiah D., a farmer in Lancaster Co Neb.; Charlotte S., deceased; Albert O., also deceased; Jonathan, who died in the late war; Alanson L., residing in Idado; Cordelia M., James V., Martha M., allof whom are deceased and Mary J. the wife of Pliny Brown, a farmer and blacksmith in Kansas.

Mr. Brown was a shoe and harness maker. He, with his family, moved from Vermont to Pennsylvania, and after a residence of three years, there, to Aurora, Erie Co NY where he followed his trade. In October 1850 they came to Prophetstown, this county, and in 1852 moved upon their farm, which Mr. Brown bought in July 1849. Upon this place he made a number of improvements, as house, barn, fences, etc. He died at his home, July 4, 1871. Mrs. B. now rents the farm.
