John APPLETON and Priscilla GLOVER); died on 11 Sep 1739 in Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts; was buried in Old Burying Ground, Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts.

    Name:
    John was a merchant in Ipswich and a colonel in the militia. He was Probate Judge from 1702 to 1739 in Essex County, Justice of the General Sessions, and Court Common Pleas, and Court common Pleas, and "for twenty years Judge of Probate for Essex, Co., during all which time no appeal was ever made from his decisions." He was a Counselor under the Charter of William and Mary and Colonel in the Ipswich regiment. He and Elizabeth had six children. His brother-in-law, Rev. John Rogers, M.A. pastor of the First Church in Ipswich, "preached on the Lord's Day after the Interment, Sept. 16 (1739)." His sermon was entitled "The perfect and upright man characterized and recommended". The brother of John rogers, the Rev. nathaniel Rogers, M.A. another pastor of the First Church in Ipswich, also gave a sermon on "the Character, Commendation and Reward of a faithful Servant of Jesus Christ." A notice of Judge Appleton's death appeared in the Boston News-Letter on 18 Sep 1739.

    John married Elizabeth ROGERS on 23 Nov 1680 in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Elizabeth (daughter of Rev John ROGERS, M.D. and Elizabeth DENISON) was born on 1 Jul 1663 in Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts; died on 13 Mar 1754 in Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts; was buried in Old Burying Ground, Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts.     She was the great-granddaughter of Governor Thomas and Dorothy (Yorke) Dudley of royal and noble ancestry. Elizabeth wrote of her granddaughter Margaret's death in the Appleton Family record, in which she laments the loss of other grandchildren. "I hope is gone to rest with my other 23 grandchildren which are gone before me. I have good hopes to meet them all att Christs right hand among his sheep and lams (sics)." Elizabeth is remembered fondly in her obituary: "Ipswich, March 13, 1754. This Day died here, Mrs. Elizabeth Appleton, in the 91st year of her age, widow Relict of Reverend John rogers, President of Harvard College who deceased about 70 years ago. A Gentlewoman of very superiour Endowments of Nature, well improved by a very good Education in the Family of her Honoured Grandfather, major-General (Daniel) Dennison deceased. She had a very extensive Knowledge, not only in the outward Affairs of Life, but in the great Things of GOD, and of Religion; so as to discourse understandingly and judiciously upon almost any Subject that occured in Conversation. In her kind and generous Entertainment of her Friends, and prudent good Economy in the Management of all Family Affairs, few have equalled her. And not withstanding her very advanced Age, continued the Care and management of her Family to the last. her Piety & Devotion was also very eminent and exemplary, manifested in her Love to the House of GOD, and a most constant Attendance upon the publick Worship, (until detained for the last three Years of her Life) and in her solicitous concern, and deligent Endeavours for the Good, especially the spiritual Good of all her Friends, entertaining them not only with the greatest Kindness; but with the most serious & affectionate Discourse about spiritual Things. She retained her intellectual Powers in an uncommon Degree, and with a steady Faith, & Hope in GOD thro' Jesus Christ, as to herself; and with benevolent Wishes, and fervent Prayers for all about her, she resigned up her Soul.---"
