Gov. John Cranston, father of Gov. Samuel and the immigrant Cranston ancestor, was born either in Scotland or in London, England, circa 1625; son of rev. James Cranston, M.A., who was a chaplain to King Charles I. John Cranston came to America circa 1637, under the auspices of Capt. Jeremiah Clarke, and by 1643/44 had arrived in Newport where he remained for the rest of his life. He served the Colony in many diverse capacities. He was elected Governor of the Colony 8 November 1678, and remained in that office until his death 12 march 1679/80. Gov. Samuel Cranston was his eldest son.
John married Mary CLARKE on 3 Jun 1658. Mary (daughter of Capt. Jeremy CLARKE and Frances LATHAM) was born about 1641; died on 7 Apr 1711 in Newport, Newport Co., Rhode Island. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
