    Herbert Pelham (the younger), Esq., of Hastings, Sussex, and Boston, co. Lincoln, was the step-son of Penelope's older sister Elizabeth. On 6 Nov 1598, described as 'Herbert Pelham, son and heir apparent of Herbert Pelham of Mychelham, Sussex', he registered as a student at Gray's Inn, London.

    Name:
    Herbert Pelham (the elder), Esq., of Fordingham, co. Dorset and Hellingly, Sussex, son and heir of Anthony Pelham, of Buxstepe in Warbleton, Sussex, by his wife Margaret Hall. He was born about 1546 (aged twenty at his father's death in 1566), and was some thirty years her senior. His father sent him to Cambridge where he matriculated Fellow-Commoner from Queen's Michaelmas, 1562. Herbert and Elizabeth Pelham had four sons and six daughters. He was Sheriff of Sussex, but in 1582 was described as neglecting his duties. On Oct. 31, 1587 he purchased the manor of Michelham (the site of a priory). His later years were characterized by debt and sale of property including Michelham.
