  1. 1.  John BALDWIN was born in England; died in 1687 in Stonington, New London, Connecticut, USA.

    Notes:

    Name:
John Baldwin appears in Billerica, Mass., as early as 1655. He had a grant of land there in 1657, say Farmer. He was probably one of the petitioners for land in Chelmsford in 1653, and perhaps was then with Henry, in Woburn. Many of the petitioners were from Woburn. I have not been able to identify this among the many Johns. That he was probably of the Baldwins long resident in the adjoining edges of Buckinghamshire, and Hertfordshire, in England, appears from the tradition of a very intelligent great grandson, that he came from Herts. He seems to have been intimate with Henry, of Woburn. He married there a cousin of the wife of Henry: was, as we have suggested, likely there in 1653, when petitioner for Chelmsford, but settled in Billerica, being between the towns of Chelmsford and Woburn. When he drew his will, Henry witnessed it. It is quite likely he was brother to Henry, but I know no proof. He was probably too old to be John, born June 24, 1635, son of John, of Dedham. It has been suggested that he may have been John, aged 21, and Mary, aged 20, who arrived at Boston in 1656, in the "Speedwell"; but this Mary could not, of course, have been his wife. I do not think he was so likely to have been of the "Speedwell" as the petitioner for chelmsford in 1653. His brother-in-law Thomas also settled in Billerica....

He was made freeman in 1670, and died in 1687. His will is dated Nov. 11, 1686, and to be found in Boston. H3e is styled husbandman. He calls Mary his "now marryed" wife, and gives her the west end of his dwelling; to his son John the east end. He leaves legacies to his daughters, which are to be paid "in currant county pay, at currant country price, and not as money, except my executors' pleas." The will was proved May 28, 1688.

Family/Spouse: Mary RICHARDSON. Mary was christened on 17 Nov 1638; died on 13 Apr 1657 in Milford, New Haven, Connecticut, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
