    He graduated 1711 from Harvard College. His name was placed at the head of his class, according to the custom of his time, as the son of a governor and grandson of two governors. He was made a freeman at Newport 1 May 718. In his death notice, he was described as "a gentleman of learning and piety and a bright ornament of Holy Religion."

    He was a very prominent merchant at Newport and, arguably, the most important family member. he engaged in business in 1663-64 at Barbadoes with his brothers William and Elisha. He returned to Newport where he was made a freeman on 2 May 1666. He continued his business with Barbadoes, shipping wool, horses and other goods to various places and sugar to London. He imported English goods to Rhode Island. He was imprisoned in 1668 in a "Boston goal (jail) for debt", but was released on bond that was paid for by his uncle Edward Hutchinson. Gov. Sanford had large land holdings in Jamestown, R.I. and had a house at Black Point and a town house in Newport. (Note: They had seven children, but their birth order is uncertain and requires further research.)

    Peleg married Mary CODDINGTON on 01 Dec 1674 in Portsmouth, Newport Co., Rhode Island. Mary (daughter of Gov.
