    Notes:

    Name:
The country home of this family was at Hedingworth, Leicestershire England, where lived John Robbins and his wife Hester. As the parish church of that village was burned about 1600, and with it the parish records previous to that time, but little can be learned about the family, except that John Robbins was a large land owner; that, according to his monument, still existing in the churchyard at Hedingworth, he d. 12 Aug., 1680, and was buried "according to an Act of Parliament" (whatever that may mean), and that, as appears by the parish register, Hester, his wife, was buried 7 Aug. 1697; also, that they had six sons, four of whom emigrated to America about the time of the great Puritan exodus hither.

John "Gent" first appears on the Weth. Recs. in 1638, though he may have come there two or three yrs. earlier. He was evidently a man of means, and of good social standing, as vouched for by the term "Gentleman," affixed to his name in all the early records. 10 Oct., 1638 he purchased land at Pyquang (weth.) including "20 acres of (Adventurers' land)" from John Clark, then of Quillipiack, (New Haven) - Weth ld. recs. II, 23. He was a townsman (selectman) 1652; member of General Court, 1653, 1565, '57, '59, and dying 27 June 1660, left an est. if L579-19-4; He m. Mary (dau. it has been said of Gov. Thomas & Elizabeth Welles, who d. "abt. middle part of Sept., 1659" - Weth. Rec.

QUERY - Mary, 7th ch. and dau. of Gov. Thomas Welles, was . about 1634; and acc. t Goodwin, "d. before her father." She was married and left ch. mentioned in his will; but if she m. John Robbins, Sen., would have been only 15 yeas old at date of John, r., his fourth ch. and eld. son. Is it not more prb. that the Mary Welles who m. John Robbins, Gent., might have been a sister of Gov. Welles?
