Excerpt from "A Merrill Memorial Vol. 1": John settled in Hartford as early as 1657, in which year he became an owner of land there. It is probable that he went to Hartford before coming of age, for he is said to have been adopted by Gregory Wilterton of that town. He was admitted a freeman 20 May, 1658. He was a tanner, and lived on the south side of Elm St., on the second lot west from the corne of Main St. After some years he removed to the West Division of the town, now West Hartford, where he made large purchases of land in 1683 and the following years. In 1684, 1694 and 1700 he was a "townsman", or selectman, and he was a deacon of the Second Church. He married SArah Watson, daughter of John and Margaret (Smith) Watson of Hartford. His eight sons and two daughters and the daughters husbands were all living at his death.

John married Sarah WATSON on 23 Sep 1663 in Connecticut. Sarah was born in 1646 in Connecticut. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Excerpt from "A Merrill Memorial vol. 1": Nathaniel Merrill was one of the earliest settlers of Newbury, Mass., in 1635. He was the ancestor of a vast majority of those who now bear the Merrill name in this country: it is believed, indeed, that less than one percent of the Merrills in America cantrace their pedigree to any other emigrant ancestor.
Nathaniel Merrill and his older brother John were born in England. The registers of Wherstead, a parish lying three miles south of Ipswich, in Suffolk County, England, contain the following entries:

1599, Aug. 16 John Merrell son of Nath??Merrell & Mary his wife was baptised.
1601, May 4, Nathanaell Merrell son of Nath?? Merrell & Mary his wife was baptised.

Nathaniel Merrill and his brother John settled in Newbury in the Spring of 1635, having passed a year or two at Ipswich, Mass., (then called Agawam) with most of the Newbury settlers. In 1638 Nathaniel became one of the "proprietors" of Newbury

Nathaniel married Susanna JORDON. Susanna died between 15 Jan 1672 and 1673. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
