    DEATH OF AN OLD RESIDENT.
Grandma Julia Goodrich Dies at Home of Daughter in Palmer.

"Julia Ann Colwell was born in the town of Beekman, Duchess Co., New York, June 23rd, 1812. In Poughkeepsie, New York, April 21, 1831 she was married to George Goodrich. In the year 1850 they moved to this state and settled for a time in Jerseyville. A few years later they moved to Virden and took up life on a tract of wild prairie land, a part of what is now known as the Browning farm. There, for several years, Mrs. Goodrich performed the arduous duties of a pioneer farmer's wife. Later they sold the farm and moved into this city where, on September 6, 1880, Mr. Goodrich died, and twenty-five years and three days before his faithful wife followed him across the uncharted river whose currents all set in one direction, and never by any mischance float their burdens back to this familiar shore.

"For ten or twelve years longer Grandmother Goodrich remained a well known figure in our community, and then, the infirmities of age and other causes, led her to take up her residence with her daughter Mrs. Little in Christian county, where in Taylorville, on Saturday, September 9, 1905, she quietly and gladly passed over to the other shore. Mrs. Goodrich was a mother of ten children, six of whom survive her, viz. Mrs. Mary Wright of this city, Mrs. Julia Humphreys, now of Oregon; Mrs. Rebecca Gamble, of Beatrice, Nev.; Mrs. Laura Christopher, of South Otter township, and Mrs. Emma Little of Christian county. Descended from her were thirty-six grand, thirty-seven great grand children, and one great great grand child. Some of these preceded her in death, but the majority still remain to "call her blessed." And can any higher tribute be paid to mortal woman? Six of her grandsons were present as pallbearers, and bore to a long rest in the bosom of the earth the frail remains of this rare and well beloved ancestress, worn out by the brave struggles of ninety-three years, two months, and seventeen days. God bless to the good of those who remain the fragrant memory of a good woman gone into well merited and blessed rest.

"The funeral of Mrs. Goodrich was held at the Baptist church Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Leon W. Sloan. Those present from out of town were Mrs. Emma Little and daughter Miss Jennie, Taylorville; Mrs. Hattie Kerns, daughter Mrs. Geo. Spates and son Carol Kerns, Taylorville; O. B. Britton, a son-in-law,Taylorville; Mr. & Mrs. Benj. Christopher, daughter Mrs. Mary Wiley andson Joe Christopher of Palmyra; E. C. Goodrich, a grandson of Kane and Henry Goodrich, a grandson of Jerseyville, Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Cogswell and daughter Elizabeth, and Mrs. L. M. Browning of Springfield."
