Name:
In consequences, probably, of the marriage, he was summoned to Parliament from 4 Aug 1377 by writs directed 'Johanni de Arundell', whereby he may be held to have become Lord Arndel.

He was marshal of England in 1377. Being in command of a naval expedition in aid to the Duke of Brittany, he defeated the French fleet off the coast of Cornwall. John De Arundel died testate at sea on 15 Dec 1379, being wrecked and drowned in the Irish Sea, and was buried in Lewes Priory.

John married Alianor MAUTRAVERS on 17 Feb 1358/9. Alianor (daughter of Sir John MAUTRAVERS and Gwenthlin) was born about 1345; died on 12 Jan 1404/5. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

In 1345 Richard repudiated his wife, Isabella, on the ground that he had never consented to the marriage; he received "papal recognition of the nullity of the union."

Name:
Isabel Le Despener, was born about 1312. She was married in the King's Chapel at Havering-atte-Bower on 9 Feb 1320/1, she being about eight years of age, to Richard Fitz Alan (Copped Hat), 3rd Earl of Arundel and 4th Earl of Surrey, son and heir of Edmund Fitz Alan, 8th Earl of Arundel, Baron of Oswestry, co. Salop, Baron of Clun, co. Salop, by Alice, daughter of William de Warenne. He was born about 1313, and was about seven years of age at time of marriage. In 1330-1 he was fully restored in blood and honours and obtained restitution of the Castle and honour of Arundel, becoming Earl of Arundel. Their marriage was annulled by Papal mandate on 4 Dec 1344 on the ground of his minority and of his never having willingly consented to the match. He took a distinguished part the wars with France, was Admiral of the West 1340-41 and 1345-47, commanded the second division at the Battle of Crecy, and was at the fall of Calais in 1347.

Richard married Alianor Of LANCASTER on 05 Feb 1344/5 in Ditton. Alianor (daughter of Henry Of LANCASTER and Maud DE CHAWORTH) was born about 1318 in Grismond Castle, Monmouthshire, England; died on 11 Jan 1372 in Arundel, Sussex, England; was buried in Lewes Priory. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
