    Excerpt from"Welles Family": This Robert de Vallibus founded the Priory of Lanercost, in Cumberland, for the health of the Soul of "Hubert, his Father, Graecia, his Mother, his own, with all his Ancestors' and Successors' Souls; and in 5th Stephen, 1138, gave a Fine to the King of Lviiil. vis. viiid. (58 pounds, six shillings, and eightpence), for Livery of the Mannor of Hoston, in Norfolk, which was of his Wife's Inheritance.
    In 21st Henry II. (1174) he was Sheriff of Cumberland, which county yielded no benefit to the King that year, by reason of the War. He was also Governor of Carlisle at the same time;.......and continued Sheriff of that County from 22d till the 30th of Henry II. (1175-1183) inclusive.
    This Robert de Vallibus married Ada, daughter and Heir of William de Engaine, widow of Simon de Morville, and by her had issue son and heir Robert, and another son, Ranulph.
