He served in the Scottish and French wars, and was Knight Banneret on 20 Jan 1327. he was summoned to Parliament on 23 Apr 1337 by writ directed 'Hugoni de Courteney juniori' and succeeded to the Earldom three years afters. They had eight sons (of whom only three had issue) and nine daughters three years afters. Hugh De Courtenay, Kg., 10th Earl of Devon, Lord Courtenay, son and heir of Hugh de Courtenay, Knt., Baron of Okehampton, Devon by Agnes, daughter of John De Saint John, Knt., Baron of Basing, co. Hants.
