Notes from "Commemorative Portrait and Biographical Record of Kane and Kendall Counties, Ill.: Simon E. Chaffee is a respected citizen of this county, and a successful farmer, residing on Section 21, Campton Township, where he was born November 21, 1845. Simon E. was reared on a farm, being educated in the district schools, and at an early age began farming for himself on a portion of the old homestead. His possessions include 135 acres of land, well cultivated and improved, upon which he keeps an average of forty head of fine graded cattle for dairy purposes.
March 26, 1867, he was united in marriage with Sarah E. Woodman, a native of Grafton County, N.H., born Feb 28, 1848, the daughter of Joseph and Eleanor (Barnard) Woodman, who were also early settlers in Kane County. Mr. and Mrs. Chaffee's family circle has been brightened by the advent of seven children: Anna E., Everett S., John W., Grace H., Eleanor M., (who died January 17, 1884), Earl G., and Mabel E. During the Civil War, Mr. Chaffee served in the One Hundred and Forty-seventh Illinois Infantry, Company F, also about one year after the close of the war in the Freedman's Bureau. In 1875 he was elected treasurer of the school fund, which office he has held twelve years; he has also been town clerk for ten years, and five years ago was elected supervisor, which office he now holds. He is a Republican in polities. Mr. and Mrs. Chaffee are both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in which they are held in high esteem. Mr. Chaffee having been trustee and steward since the erection of the present building....

He enlisted in Company C, 141st Illinois Volunteers, as a Private. He was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant, but was taken ill with typhoid fever and was sent home. he was in a few skirmishes only. He is a farmer and in 1884 lived in Campton.

Simon married Sarah E. WOODMAN on 26 Mar 1867 in Virgil, Illinois. Sarah (daughter of Joseph WOODMAN and Eleanor BARNARD) was born on 28 Feb 1848 in Grafton County, New Hampshire; died in 1921 in California; was buried in Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana, Orange Co., California. Notes from "Commemorative Portrait and Biographical Record of Kane and Kendall Counties, Ill." under Alonzo D. Chaffee: His father, Eber Chaffee, was a farmer, and a native of the same place (Windham County, Vermont he married Anna Davis, and by this marriage there were twelve children..... Four of the sons are living in Los Angeles, Cal., where they have homes. In 1841 Eber Chaffee removed with his family to Illinois, and settled in Campton Township, whre he engaged in agricultural pursuits, and lived until the time of his death, which occured in August, 1877, he being at the advanced age of seventy-seven years; Mrs. Chaffee having preceded him to the other world in October, 1876, at the age of seventy-three years, and both are buried in Stewart's Cemetery.

Eber married Anna DAVIS on 09 May 1822 in Athens, Windham Co., Vermont. Anna was born on 07 Apr 1803 in Grafton, Windham County, Vermont; died on 24 Oct 1876 in Campton Township, Illinois; was buried in New Hampshire Cemetery, Lily Lake, Kane Co., Illinois . [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
