    Name:
In his youth Arnulf served King Theodebert II of Austrasia. He was admired as much for his valor in battle as for his wise counsel to the king. He became Mayor of the Palace and began to play a major role in public life. After king Theodebert died in 612, a power struggle broke out among all those who hoped to succeed him. The empty throne was almost taken by the descendants of Brunhilde, who had been one of the most conspicuously murderous players in local politics ever since 568. Arnulf along with Pepin of Landen and other members of the local nobility led a successful revolt against Brunhilde's party and put King Clotaire II of Neustria on the Austrasian throne.

After the revolt Arnulf and his wife Dode both decided to enter the religious life. She became a nun and entered a convent. He was on the point of entering a monastery when in 614 he was made bishop of Metz, the capital of Ausrasia. For the next several years, he had both civil and ecclesiastical responsibilities. In addition, in 622 Clotaire II made Arnulf the tutor and chief adviser to Clotaire's son Dagobert I.

Around 627, Arnulf finally resigned all his duties and retired with his friend Romaric to a hermitage in the Vosges Mountains, which today is the abbey of Remiremont.

Arnulf was the father of St. Clodulf. Through his other son Ansgise, Arnulf would become an ancestor of the Carolingians. He is the patron saint of Metz.
